The Hermaphrodite

Set on a wall about 8' x 8'
Canvases each 16" x 20"
Back paintings between 35" and 45" high

This is the magnum opus of my senior year of college and my BFA show installation.

Taking a Jungian concept into personal territory. The Anima, Animus, and Hermaphrodite, all archetypes of the collective unconscious. Up to this point I've never done work that I'd ever feel comfortable calling a bona fide self-portrait. Considering the myriad aliases I've assumed to manage myself, I picked the two most raw: Myself as a man, and myself as a woman. The male portrait has elements more commonly used in traditional female portraiture, while the female has more masculine elements. More elaboration on the idea and everything entailed in this installation later, I need to become unconscious for a while.

Neither painting is fully finished. I was working on each for about a month and a half and as long as possible before the space was closed.

IF YOU ARE IN THE CHICAGO AREA: The show is still up until November 14th! It is viewable at the Sullivan Galleries, located on the 7th floor at 33 S. State Street in the Chicago Loop (very close to all major train and Metra/South Shore lines). Gallery open from 11AM-6PM.
